Quick answer
Your favourable element (用神, "useful god") is the element that brings your chart into balance. It's found by judging whether your Day Master is strong or weak, and it guides everything from colours to career and timing.
How it's found
- Weak Day Master: it's favoured by its own element and the element that produces it.
- Strong Day Master: it's favoured by the elements it produces, controls, or is controlled by.
- Season matters too. A chart born in winter often needs warmth (Fire).
Simple ways to use it
- Colours: green for Wood, red for Fire, yellow or brown for Earth, white or gold for Metal, and blue or black for Water.
- Directions and environments, in line with feng shui.
- Careers linked to the element.
- Timing: years that bring your favourable element often feel more supportive.
Questions
Is it the element I'm missing?
Not always. Sometimes the missing element would actually unbalance the chart.
