Quick answer
BaZi (八字, "eight characters") is a Chinese system that reads the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Each one becomes a "pillar" of two characters, giving eight in total. Together they describe your natural strengths, your challenges and the timing of your life's seasons.
Where BaZi comes from
BaZi grew out of the Chinese calendar and the theory of the Five Elements. It was refined over many centuries and is still used across Asia, for personal insight, career choices and timing big decisions.
The four pillars
- Year pillar: your roots, family background and early life.
- Month pillar: your environment, career and the season you were born into.
- Day pillar: you and your closest relationships. Its top character is your Day Master.
- Hour pillar: your inner hopes, later life and children.
Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem on top (one of 10) and an Earthly Branch below (one of 12, linked to the zodiac animals).
The Five Elements
Every character carries one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. A BaZi reading looks at how balanced these are in your chart, which element supports you, and which one drains you.
What BaZi can and can't tell you
We see your chart as about a third of your story. The rest is your choices and your surroundings. BaZi doesn't decide your life. It shows the ground you're standing on, so you can make the most of good years and take care in harder ones.
Questions
Do I need my exact birth time?
It helps a lot, because the hour pillar adds two of the eight characters. See why your birth hour matters.
Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
No. Your zodiac animal is just one of the eight characters. See BaZi vs the Chinese zodiac.
Is BaZi religious?
No. It's a calendar-based system of interpretation, not a religion.
